July 2, 2009: Lock and Key

Book: Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen
Read for the Sarah Dessen Challenge

Amazon.com Description:

Ruby is used to taking care of herself. But now she’s living in a fancy new house with her sister Cora—a sister she hasn’t seen in ten years—and her husband Jamie—creator of one of the most popular online networking sites. She’s attending private school, wearing new clothes, and for the first time, feels the promise of a future that include college and her family. So why is she so wary? And what is Nate— the adorable and good-hearted boy next door— hiding behind his genial nature? As Ruby starts to see, there’s a big difference between being given help, and being able to accept it. And sometimes, in order to save yourself, you’ve got to reach out to someone else.

My Thoughts: First of all, LOVED it! Second of all - I deserve a freaking medal for waiting for this book to come out in paperback (pssst....Along For the Ride can hurry up with the paperback). All of my other books are paperback and they just match so nicely!

Even though Ruby seemed a little rude in the beginning, I really enjoyed her character and I loved her growth arc. Yes, I am a sap because I loved her relationship with Nate a ton (Nate, are you real? If so, please call me!) He was such a good person and was always looking out for her and when we learned his story and saw the way he closed himself up, I was heartbroken....I *may* have cried. I felt like I was with the characters throughout their journey and I even got butterflies in my stomach when Nate kissed her, like I was nervous for her! How dorky am I?

I also loved the relationship between Cora, Jamie and Ruby. The first chapter did not paint Cora in a nice light, but as the book went on and as Ruby learned about her sister - we also learned about her and began to realize that Cora would do anything to protect her sister. Also, how awesome is Jamie? They both really cared about her future, and did not see her as a burden to their life and I really liked that aspect of the book.

It is a great book that you won't want to put down. Now, where can I get a key necklace?

OK, I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't read anything by Sarah Dessen yet - I kinda want to, but the stories just sort of don't appeal that much? Sooo is she really that good? Which books by her would you recommend? :)

The cover for her latest book Along for the Ride is absolutely stunning and it really makes me want to read the book! I'll most likely order it asap because I simply must have that beautiful book in my collection!!!

I also want to read her books because she just seems so lovely in her interviews and everyone's praising her soooo I don't think I'll be able to resist her much longer, lol.

ps: Sorry if I don't reply for a while, it's just that I'm from Europe and it's 2 am here and I need to be up again in less than 5 hours so I'll be off to sleep now. Great meeting you today. *shakes hands* G'night! ;)

Good night! It was really nice to meet you too! We have a lot in common!

I don't know what it is about Sarah Dessen books....she is kind of like my Judy Blume. Her books just really get me each time - even if the story doesn't sound interesting (I've stopped reading the blurbs), I always really enjoy her books.

I loved Lock and Key and I'm actually going to be re-reading all of her books, so I will definitely let you know which ones I liked! The covers on these are so pretty too.

I like the Along for the Ride cover but I don't want hardcover! I wonder if I'll be able to hold off until the paperback is released! Also, the cover really perplexes me....if you notice, it looks like she is sitting on the handlebars. How is the bike still standing?!

Yeah, it's great to find a person with a similar taste in books! Your blog's fantastic, I'll have to check it out throughly as soon as I have some more time - things are pretty busy atm and I'm already slacking far more than I should be, heh.

I think I'll definitely give Sarah Dessen a try, possibly starting with Along for the Ride simply because the cover's so wonderful!

Ooh, maybe there's magic going on on the cover? ;) Nah, I think it's just that the guy is sitting in the back and holding the bike. It could also be that the bike was held by people behind the scenes or simply good ol' photoshop. :) Either way, I love it, it's too cute!

If you read Along for the Ride, let me know how it is - I really don't know if I should buy it yet or wait until it's at the library! I want it in paperback!

I actually saw it in the bookstore yesterday and the book is just really nice - she always has really pretty books!

I'm definitely planning to read it during the summer because it just seems like such a summery book! No worries, a review will be posted as soon as I'm done with it, but it might take me a while to get round to it, seeing how I don't even own the book yet, boo. It sucks living outside US - I mean, you can just go out and buy a book immediately whereas I have to order it online and then wait for like a week to get it, which sucks because I'm really impatient when it comes to books - I want them and I want them NOW, but sadly that's not possible. :( Oh well. ;)

yeah, it is a bummer when you have to wait for book! Although, I have a huge pile and never read them right away - but I still get anxious!

Her books are always great in the summer :)
